Austin’s funky duo of Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube — aka Greyhounds — have their sophomore album Change of Pace releasing this Friday. The group’s psychedelic soul is a potent and eclectic mix. The cultural and political battlegrounds of America are very much the central preoccupation of this new record. Farrell says, “There’s this polarization of American culture where you’re either on our side or you’re against us, and I don’t think that really helps anybody.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Trube tells PopMatters about Change of Pace: “I feel like the universe threw Anthony and me together. We have very different backgrounds (me from East Texas and Farrell from Los Angeles), and ultimately we have different points of view. However, we realized that we had something special when we came together. We share an optimism about what this world can be, how powerful we are when we stand together, and we realize that we all come from the same place, which is echoed in songs like Walls and Before BP. But we also try to balance a little of that seriousness with songs like Late Night Slice and Check The Gas, which have a more lighthearted and easy going vibe. The diversity in the styles shows how we balance each other as artists and brothers.

“Captain Beefheart, Funkadelic, Mark Mothersbaugh/DEVO, ZZ Top, Ed Green, Bobby Charles, Los Lobos They were all pioneers, and people that didn’t follow the rules. There was a sort of realness that I dig, that we dig, and is something we tried to bring on this album.”
