I have to admit that I’m not versed in the genre of jazz, and therefore lack the technical jargon one requires to do justice to a jazz review. What I do understand about jazz are the more cultural significations, specifically how it resonates within both the academic music community and the social music community. It is clear, upon research of Bobby Avey, that the critical acclaim abounds for his fresh and thick melodic and modal jazz compositions. There is no argument here. The boy is quite adept at scaling some of the most intriguing and intoxicating music around. His BA in jazz studies from Purchase Conservatory of Music has served him well. His composition style is most often flawless and stimulating, and while A New Face will excite the more hardcore jazz fans, the cross-over appeal is apparent as well. There is enough technical skill to satisfy aficionados, while sweet melodic chord progressions also will please a less trained ear. A New Face is a solid effort from an impressive composer and performer.
