“Bedroom producer” is an overused term nowadays but in Will Wiesenfeld’s case its use might be warranted: he actually recorded last year’s stunning Cerulean in his bedroom over the course of two months. Still, Wiesenfeld isn’t nearly as maladjusted as that factoid might imply. On Friday night, he proved to be a more than capable performer, leaving a sold out club wanting more after an hour-long set. The primary tool in his arsenal was his MIDI controller setup, which allowed him to tweak samples in real time, letting some ride for longer than expected, cutting others short and inserting blasts of static and noise for punctuation. The end result was a set that felt unpredictable in the ways that good live music should, providing new variations on Cerulean‘s 14 tracks. Wiesenfeld’s songs may have had their start in the bedroom but if Friday night’s set offered any indication, they’re likely headed for much larger spaces.
