Within the stoner metal genre, three approaches have gained prominence in the past decade: the progressive approach of Mastodon, the blues approach of Clutch and the groove approach of The Sword. Swedish quartet New Keepers of the Water Towers seem to be trying all three at once on their new full-length album, The Calydonian Hunt. Elements of all three styles are evident throughout this album. On some tracks, the styles are blended together for a flowing sound with constant change, while on other songs, a single style comes to the forefront and dominates. While these stylistic shifts do create a slight lack of cohesion, they nonetheless create a vibrant atmosphere that keeps listeners attracted and engaged. This is a good album for fans of stoner metal generally but not as much for fans who’d prefer to stick to their own personal niche.
