In a valiant attempt to stay hip and current (and probably because there were no Katy Perry songs left), this week’s Glee featured Duck Sauce’s “Barbra Streisand”. This bold move comes on the heels of last week’s stab at Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers”.
The Duck Sauce cover was less cover, more dance-off, and bore striking resemblance to the rendition of “Safety Dance” last season (originally by Men Without Hats). Both were performed in the same suburban mall set, between two escalators, and involved flashmob style dancing. You’ll perhaps recall that Duck Sauce is the DJ duo of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden, but don’t get too excited about Glee‘s pop culture relevancy, because this track dropped almost a year ago.
Additionally, last week’s episode featured Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers”, but it wasn’t cause for quite as much celebration; in the clip, outcast Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) is cut off by booing from the audience for her admittedly emo performance. “I Follow Rivers” is off of Li’s most recent album, which was released in March.
Never fear, Glee isn’t straying too far from the pop pack; this week’s episode was entitled “Born This Way”, and was themed around empowerment. It was the second Lady Gaga episode they’ve done to date.
