New Zealand-born singer-songwriter Simon Spire offers up a taste of his upcoming full-length Four-Letter Words. How is it? Not bad. Hook-driven pop for fans of John Mayer and the like, born to be played on FM and satellite radio, that sort of thing. At times reminiscent of ‘90s pop giants Toad The Wet Sprocket, Spire proves himself as an exciting emerging songwriter with “Knocking On An Open Door”, a decent balladeer (“No Solid Ground”), and a capable vocalist throughout. If it’s true what Spire says about himself in the closing “The Blue Pill” (that he’s too honest), we can hope for a long line of songs that are heartfelt and wise.
