Kael Smith and Matt Herron were, once upon a time, known as Khale but a slight change in direction and outlook convinced the pair a nü moniker might be in order. No matter, this eight-song outing finds the friends in fine form, coming off as a quieter version of Portland’s AU. Bent on solid compositions and layered atmospherics songs such as “Glowing Beatdown” and “Fort” might best exemplify the mischief which Mombi gets up to but others, including the opening “Monsoon”, don’t fare that badly either. A really appealing band with serious potential and talent, Mombi is the sound of a tear-soaked night that only makes you feel better and better.
