Jonny King: Above All

Jonny King was a wunderkind jazz pianist-turned-lawyer -– who has now turned back to jazz music. Above All is his first album in 15 years, though his time away from recording doesn’t seem to have dulled any of his senses. It really sounds like he just slid back into the game without blinking, which is probably what he did. After all, this is a guy who wrote a book about jazz, What Jazz Is. Ed Howard provides bass, Victor Lewis the drums. Above All is about as professional as an attorney’s office and as straight-faced as King’s cover photo. Any hints of strangeness that he may offer -– like the sprinkled, rollicking lines of “The Wedding Song”, the light impressionism of the title track or the modern pointillism of “Catharsis” -– all get rolled up in the rugs of the standard piano trio for fear of calling too much attention to itself.
