Duke Robillard has had an outstanding career as a guitarist and has even developed a recognizable sound. It was easy to pin down which Tom Waits and Bob Dylan tracks he played on, probably the two artists that lent him his biggest exposure. While Wobble Walkin’ by no means matches the heights he achieved with Waits, who seems to bring out the best in everybody, it does stand as a relatively interesting meditation on standard jazz and blues. There’s no denying the abilities of any of the trio’s individual members, but it would’ve been nice to hear more inventive takes on the genres instead of basic retreads. There are very few moments of genuine inspiration to be found here and while it’s by no means a bad record, it’s not a particularly great one either.
