CocoRosie have always had a somewhat outlandish reputation based on gimmick as much as material. At first, they were a difficult band to get into, let alone process. As I spent more time on them, however, some of their layers started to peel away until their core shone plainly through; CocoRosie are, at heart, a pop band. No matter how many weird trimmings they decided to fit their songs with or how weirdly similar to Joanna Newsom they sound, every arrangement is an accessible one. That may be true now more than ever as both “We Are on Fire” and the Antony Hegarty-featuring “Tearz for Animals” sound as radio-ready as possible. The band has shed a lot of their pretense and scaled back a lot to achieve this. The end result is surprisingly pleasing and sets them up to be a potential crossover success.
