When Big Science started, I almost mistook them for Liars. Opening track “All the Heat Has Escaped” is so masterfully layered with eerie atmospheric arrangements that I was hoping they’d continue on in that vein. While that’s certainly not what happens with the rest of Big Science the fact that the ensuing material is so different but still nearly as strong only speaks to the band’s versatility.

What the majority of Big Science is most reminiscent of is the best bits of the best ’80s revivalist bands, from the Killers to Interpol, packed into an intriguing whole. Nearly every song has the potential to be a major hit. That accessibility is the only downside to Big Science, only because when they stretch outside of that zone, like they do on the opener, it’s stunning. This is a very strong debut from a band worth keeping an eye on.
