Josh Ritter’s Live at the Iveagh Gardens. The Weakerthans’ Live at Burton Cummings. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’ Abattoir Blues Tour. All of those had way more going for them in both the audio and visual department than the standard CD/DVD package. They featured bands at the height of their powers and were shot and mastered to perfection. Which is part of what makes Rubblebucket’s Live in Chicago so disappointing. For starters, the band doesn’t have the material or live reputation to warrant that treatment and their primary genre tag, in most cases (including this one), indicates soul-crushingly boring self-indulgence. There’s virtually nothing that makes Rubblebucket stand out from any other reggae-influenced jam band. The band plays well throughout but never ignites a fire or comes close to touching something like Glitter and Doom. This is the definition of average.
