It becomes abundantly clear from the start of What Matters that this quartet knows how to handle fire. The runs that Vitaly Golovnev pulls on trumpet are nothing short of enviable. There’s a certain edge to his playing that most younger musicians dabbling in the genre are completely missing. Despite how impressive these runs are, they’d be nothing without a more-than-capable rhythm section, which is another element that this quartet brings to the table. The scattered trills and fierce arpeggios get bolstered by bass improvisation and intricate drum patterns. All of the material here is extremely concise but retains a loose feeling that shapes much of What Matters‘ vaguely free jazz style. A very exciting record that arrived at a necessary time. More jazz musicians need to take their cues from this quartet.
