The Mowgli’s are a seven-piece collective outfit who are as upbeat as the Polyphonic Spree but as grounded as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes. Their music is a delightful blend of summer coastal powerpop and hints of folk-rock. Of the 14 tracks on Sound the Drum, nearly all of them are indisputable winners. This is feel-good music delivered with integrity, deftly avoiding the most definable aspect of twee. Unfortunately, the length does start to ultimately slow things down at the end, making it clear that this probably would’ve benefited from a multiple EP release run, rather than be clustered together into one impressive package. That’s really the only complaint I’ve got in regards to Sound the Drum and it’s really not much of one. The Mowgli’s have crafted a ridiculously fun record that’ll be well worth your time.
