Haroula Rose’s EP So Easy, which follows her fine 2011 debut These Open Roads, is a five-song stopgap before what will presumably be her next full-length. As is the way of these things, it’s tough to get terribly excited about such a short set. The opening numbers, “Only Friends” and “So Easy”, are forgettable folk-pop confections that might provide a change of pace in the context of a full album but here just come off as lightweight. The next two songs, “Already Yours” and “Slow Dancing”, are moodier, downtempo numbers that carry a bit more weight. Only the closing cover of Jimmy Webb’s “Wichita Lineman” achieves anything like memorability. Rose is blessed with an expressive, wistful voice and solid guitar playing chops, and her best arrangements leave plenty of air for these elements to breathe. Let’s hope she’s back with a more substantial offering soon.
