You’ve likely heard records similar to Leave the Bottle recently, but you’d also probably have difficulty naming one of that crop that betters it. Leave the Bottle‘s compositions are masterful, the interplay between the musicians is astounding, and Town Mountain supply it with an army of drive. The fact that Town Mountain have managed to create a record that’s almost completely original (the lone exception being a cover of the Wood Brother’s “Loaded”) that matches up to bluegrass standards should probably tell you they’re travelling the right paths. The third track, “Up the Ladder”, evokes “Johnny B. Goode” and sets the band into a joyful sprint that doesn’t cease until the record’s last stretch of songs, when it alternates slow song by fast song until “Don’t Go Home” shuts down Leave the Bottle in a smoky blaze, leaving the record smoldering. An absolute triumph of a record.
