Hailing from Brooklyn, a city renowned for producing abrasive music, comes the gentle powerpop of the Letter Yellow. On their debut record Walking Down the Streets they manage to conjure up similarities to acts like Nada Surf, while struggling to achieve an identity of their own. While that may seem like a barbed compliment or softened insult, the fact of the matter is that this is an incredibly well-versed and put together band. They may not have their own voice yet but their songs are strong enough that it won’t matter much. This is an immensely enjoyable powerpop record that’s not very memorable from a band that seems fully capable of making that transition. Time will tell, and I’ll be pulling for them.
