It was only a year ago that I saw Mark Mallman transform a small bar/venue in Green Bay, WI into a madhouse. There was something so engaging about his personality and presence, it was impossible not to be intrigued. Since that first brush, I’ve been waiting for new material from the manic frontman. Now that it’s arrived I’ve got conflicted feelings. While Double Silhouette does contain some tracks that are indicative of his overall talent, there’s still some questionable decisions in production. Stripped down to his live setup, there’s a ferocious immediacy that doesn’t drive but pummels his songs home. Here, while the layered effect does work, it also dampens the songs to a certain degree. Double Silhouette is an utterly worthwhile LP but to fully appreciate the man’s brilliance and his music, seek out more of his discography and see him live.
