The District Attorneys, responsible for one of this year’s best records in Slowburner, close out the calendar with this free four-song EP. Not simply b-sides from that album, these songs were recorded in their own separate bash-out-a-track-a-day session as a run-up to recording Slowburner‘s follow-up. If you enjoyed Slowburner, Jr. holds more of the band’s exuberant goodness. “King Is Boss” kicks in with a ’50s-style intro that morphs into something more modern, right down to a blaring harmonica solo. “Stupa” leads in with a drum beat that sounds like the precursor to something extremely heavy, but which instead gives way to a gentle lead guitar line and harmonies. Each of Jr.‘s four songs show the District Attorneys’ talent for finding a good melody and then throwing in whatever influences work. This download is as good an introduction as any to one of 2012’s most promising new bands, and you can’t argue with the price.
