Tusks as a band and Total Entertainment as an album present a challenge that sees several variations on different levels of complexity; it’s unlike anything but intensely familiar at the same time. Total Entertainment is packed with meticulously rendered art-pop songs with stunning complexities in individual arrangement pieces for at least one instrument on any given track. It’s a mostly light and decadent affair that floats by and offers a fair amount of enjoyment but never truly grips. Total Entertainment is certainly an intelligent record and it should appeal to a certain sect of the more mannered indie pop crowd but as well as its crafted and as unique as it is, it still feels like there’s a few sparks missing. It’s a beguiling debut full-length that has a few knockout tracks and posits Tusks as a band to watch out for as they progress.
