On Tuesday April 2nd, after all the April fools headlines had subsided, Mike Doughty announced that he intended to “re-imagine” 11 songs from Soul Coughing’s original material for a new, completely crowd-funded record.
The announcement was made through a rather humble video on the MusicPledge web site, and just fourteen hours later, it had apparently spread with meme-like fury among his fans and surpassed its original goal.
Though revisiting old material years after it has made a mark on popular culture is a particularly risky proposition, Mike is joined by notable up and coming hip hop producer Good Goose. Together they intend to release 11 digital tracks to the minimum backers among a varying array of gifts and rewards to the highest backers which range from autographed CDs to personal performances and even ownership of his guitar.
“There will be large, booming beats, deep upright bass, probably more stuff along the lines of the music I’ve been making for the last dozen years, weirdness, and…and, actually, I don’t know what.”
