How much are we to blame? Let Shilpa Ray put this question into musical form with tart lyrical observations (“we never thanked her after we gang-banged her”) and trademark harmonium (accompanied quite nicely here by a pedal steel guitar).
Apart from last year’s highly satisfying “Nocturnal Emissions”, relatively silent on releasing original material since 2011’s Teenage and Torture, “Mother Is a Misanthrope” hints that Ray’s forthcoming EP, It’s All Self-Fellatio Shilpa Ray, may be a beguilingly gentle affair. Although a lot of aural harshness is absent here, the song still chills; those doo-wop inspired backing vocals soothe at first, but in time they sound more like a frigid wind blowing.
It’s All Self-Fellatio Shilpa Ray will be release October 21 via Nick Cave’s Bad Seed LTD.
