Mexican Knives’ “Killer Snake” is one serpentine tune. Dominated by a sidewinding surf rock guitar line, the song feels like it came from a southwestern garage in the 1960s, all desert sand and blinding sun getting in the way of nighttime roistering. It’s grimy and sleazy with the right amount of sweetness. Dirty rock done right, in other words. The video, with its juxtaposition of pay phone and cell phone usage, gives a visual equivalent to the Detroit band’s sound, which melds the archaic with the modern.
