Sisters Of… is a St Joseph, Missouri-based experi-metal and post-rock project founded by multi-instrumentalist Aaron Coker—who’s previously played in bands such as Appleseed Cast, and Reggie & The Full Effect. The band’s debut EP, Follow Me As a Ghost, traverses the field of primarily instrumental compositions, taking deep dives into dense vortexes, and drifting on the ethereal currents of more orchestrally inclined arrangements.
Joining Coker on the self-produced EP are guitarist and writing partner Chris Clark and bassist Isaac Khan, and together the trio shape sophisticated soundtracks. Follow Me As a Ghost’s five evocative songs, including “In a Sea of Red Strands”, “Sister Chance” and the epic “Circle/9”, draw you in as steel-clad exteriors give way to dark melodic eddies. Huge, chugging Neurosis-esque barrages feature, as do swells of harmonic guitar, à la Mogwai, and acoustic movements, distorting dirges, and pounding percussion build to detonating crescendos throughout.
PopMatters is proud to premiere Follow Me As a Ghost. In a world where instrumental rock so often wanders into aimless self-indulgence, Sisters Of… ensures that the emotional reward of musical journeys played straight from the heart is ever present.
