The Village Voice in New York may have been cutting their writers/staff earlier this year, but they aren’t afraid to tack on a new culinary event on the New York scene. Following in the foot steps of their ‘Choice Eats’ food event and their beer-themed ‘Brooklyn Pour’, the Voice will introduce ‘Holiday Spirits’ to Queens at Studio Square on December 5th, “the 80th anniversary of the day that ended the Prohibition era”.
As the press release describes it, “‘Holiday Spirits’ focuses on bringing event goers samples of New York City’s top distillers and drinks from top notch local brands, as well as a sprinkling of national ones. Highlights of this year’s complimentary passed hors d’oeuvres include Pork Arepa with Oaxacan Cheese & Micro Cilantro, Crab Cakes with Tartar Sauce & Lemon Wedges and Zucchini Cupcakes with Avocado Cream Cheese Frosting & Pea Shoots”, however there isn’t a specific restaurant name or food truck associated with these dishes.
Still, expect the liquor to be top notch and the views to be spectacular. The venue looks towards the Manhattan skyline. Being high atop the city might make you want to get down, but I don’t mean from the heights, I mean dancing (yeah, terrible word play). Expect the spirited atmosphere to be enhanced by some musical acts. First there will be The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn “a 5-piece jazz, swing and blues band that will transport guests back to the days of Speakeasies and Prohibition” while DJ Tim Martell takes over a separate floor with a more “contemporary” style.
Hopefully the food is available in sufficient quantities to soak up some liquids but all in all, the event seems reasonably priced for a bacchanal affair based on premium spirits.
