Leigh Marble – “Pony” (video) (Premiere)

There’s that weird 2 am bar scenario where it’s murky who is being picked up and who is doing the picking. It’s that nebulous situation captured in the new video for Portland singer-songwriter Leigh Marble’s “Pony”.

Directed by Robin Washburn and starring Marble and actress Cora Benesh, the video is equally humorous and unnerving, built around the idea that, come closing time, you may leave with more than you had in mind. The song hails from Marble’s 2012 LP Where the Knives Meet Between the Rows and stands as a unabashed, cocksure nugget of fun amid an otherwise somber and dark record. The aptly-titled tune is rife with galloping percussion, chugging guitars and Westerbergian wordplay, making it a solid, no frills rocker.

Coinciding with the video’s release is a new EP, also titled Pony, featuring two versions of the titular song, a remix of Where the Knives Meet Between the Rows’ “Nail” and a drastic reworking of John Cougar Mellencamp’s “Cherry Bomb”.
