Claire is actually a five-piece band from Munich. On their five-track debut EP, Broken Promise Land, they nail the clinical yet hook-filled synthpop sound of the early, pre-digital 1980s. Thick analog sounds pulse and ripple on cue, augmented by bits of trebly guitar and just a hint of modern-day 4/4 dance music. There are two modes here. The title track and “Pioneers”, for example, are brooding mid-tempo numbers. It’s no surprise Giorgio Morodor has remixed the former. Meanwhile, “Invincible” and single “Games” are bright and uptempo. Josie-Claire Bürkle’s sexy/vulnerable add a eurodisco cool that suggests Icona Pop without the camp. Sharp, catchy, and accomplished, Broken Promise Land whets the appetite for Claire’s full-length album, which is scheduled to hit North America in 2014.
