With its gently soulful guitar riff, pulsing Eurodisco rhythm, and catchy, emotive chorus, “The Morning” sounds like one of the best songs of the young year. It’s the most immediate track on Dreams, but far from the end of the story. Whomadewho haven’t overhauled their sophisticated sound. They have, however, refined it to a hugely satisfying degree.
Tomas Høffding’s and Jeppe Kjellberg’s warm voices are just on the right side of the theatrical, delivering melancholy yet winning meditations on the passing of time and life’s struggles and consolations. “New Beginning” is pensive and jazzy, “Hiding in Darkness” and “Heads Above” are artfully danceable synth-pop, while closer “United” is dreamy and stunningly pretty. Excellent in terms of both style and substance, Dreams is a richly rewarding combination of art and pop.
