In 1999, the Columbus, Ohio-based band Go Robot, Go! released an incredibly tuneful sophomore album called Convertible (in fact, you can hear half of it here). Had it been released on a larger label in a larger city with a louder mastering job, it really could have gone places. But thanks to the lack of any huge success, Go Robot, Go! have relaxed into a rhythm of recording when they want to and releasing the material themselves.
Good Vibes in Fashion Swimwear finds the band operating on a more subtle wavelength. They still traffic in the same summery pop and robotic harmonies as before, spinning out songs like “My Brain Is In Space” and “The Foxy Girls” as if they couldn’t unfold in any other way. But in the nuts and bolts of the tunes, something doesn’t ring as immediate as most fair-to-disposable power pop. No, things are a shade more subtle here. This time, the band has sent out a small army of brainworms that will, after a few spins, creep into that spot in your head that usually keeps an eye out for the next Weezer. Think of Good Vibes in Fashion Swimwear as 12 little sleepers.
