“When you look around, and all you see is evil… the only thing left to do is blast magic,” Chad Ross of Toronto-based rock outfit Comet Control says in describing the lead cut off his band’s self-titled debut. “This song travels from darkness into blinding light.”
Over the course of its eight-minute runtime, “Blast Magic” maintains a steady build that gradually and subtly builds in intensity. This song structure is not unlike the kind one is bound to hear in a post-metal tune, but Comet Control amps up that genre’s particular formula by drenching the song in a woozy psychedelic haze. The juxtaposition between the song’s palpable low end and the ethereal haze of the psychedelic influences makes for a promising opening salvo to what is an equally promising debut album.
