Sassparilla has an amazing sound, mixed with vintage blues blended with soulful vocals and down home instrumentation. The band is releasing not one, but two records on June 17th, Pasajero and Hullabaloo. This group is really special and we urge you to check out these tunes, which Sassparilla hand-picked for us as their favorites from the new albums.
Sassparilla’s frontman, Kevin Blackwell says that Pasajero‘s “What the Devil Don’t Know” “is part of the bigger picture. The first record is intended to be a story, a “pulp novel” set to music. By the time this track hits, our man has done wrong and he knows it. So I wanted to put the antagonist in church. Not any church, a God fearing, ya’ll gonna burn and there ain’t nothing to be done church. “What the Devil Don’t Know” is charismatic gospel. Good old snake handling fire and brimstone. A fat preacher under a fat tent. Wavin’ his finger in the air and telling folks just how wrong it is to be human.”
Blackwell says about Hullabaloo‘s “Cocaine” that he “wrote ‘Cocaine’ in about as long as it takes to sing it. And we recorded it in exactly as long as it took to play it. In my attic with a borrowed mic and compressor. ‘Cocaine’ is a live favorite. In turn, its one of mine. It’s anthemic. It’s not literally about cocaine. It’s about how we burn. And we all burn differently. Sometimes out in the open. Others times in private. But we will burn.”
