Silent Lions frontman Dean Tartaglia is one of the Midwest’s most prolific and seasoned young musicians. Turning 24 this week, the Ohio native is dropping a surprise EP, accompanied by a minimalistic, slideshow-style video for the song “I Feel Something”.
The brief tune has an autumnal world weariness, as stark and striking instrumentally as the images that flit across the screen. The EP it hails from, ROSE, features two versions of the song, as well as three other cuts, including a cover of Low’s “Will the Night”. Produced by Mat Kerekes, ROSE is Tartaglia’s most spacious, raw, and perhaps most concise release yet. Released via Toledo, Ohio-based NAH Collective, the EP is available digitally via the label’s website and deantartaglia.bandcamp.com on Thursday, Aug. 21.
The last five years have seen Tartaglia play more than 500 gigs in 40 states and nearly a dozen countries. He’s also self-released six records between 2008 and 2012. His first break came when he joined Detroit’s the Sights as a saxophonist and, with them, supported Tenacious D for five months on their 2012 world tour. More recently, Tartaglia has been busy with bass-and-drum, heavy soul duo Silent Lions, with whom he’s released two EPs and played 150 dates in the last year and a half.
