The New York Times recently declared that we are all nerds. We can now count kids as part of that population. MC Frontalot was the King of Nerdcore before it was cool or popular. He created strange and smart spiels about stuff you learned in science and lit classes instead of whatever other trend was happening at the time. This time he has created a children’s album (Question Bedtime) meant to indoctrinate kids into asking questions through the retelling of fairy tales. There’s “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, as well as lesser-known stories rapped in fresh attire to stimulate the nipper brains of the younger set. Frontalot’s joined in the fun by similar talents including Kid Koala, Jean Grae, and Open Mike Eagle. While this is fun to listen to, the 14-tracks aren’t exactly catchy. I cannot imagine many kids having the patience to enjoy these tracks; even the Bedtime skits kind of drag. Despite the creativity involved, my guess is that nerdy children will look elsewhere for their pleasures.
