Drummer Julian Bahula was hugely prolific in the South African jazz scene in the mid-to-late ’60’s, making music with groups such as the Malombo Jazz Makers, Jabula, and Jazz Afrika. Fans of world and jazz music can’t afford to miss his unique brand of rhythmic effervescence.
The forthcoming compilation Spirit of Malombo: Malombo, Jabula, Jazz Afrika 1966-1984 captures the highlights of Bahula’s musical outings. The extensive release also features rare photos, collectibles, and extensive sleeve notes from author Francis Gooding.
Below you can stream “Hleziphi”, a track that features an inviting, jazzy chord progression.
