Pegi Young and the Survivors – “Lonely Women Make Good Lovers” (audio) (Premiere)

The vintage barroom feel of Pegi Young's take on the minor country classic "Lonely Women Make Good Lovers" is but a small taste of what's to come on her new album.

Pegi Young and the Survivors‘ rendition of “Lonely Women Make Good Lovers” is the kind of song that evokes images of worn down barrooms

that serve whiskey on the cheap. After a couple of rounds, a song like this would come on, either on a jukebox or played live by a band that frequents such establishments. It’s a classic image, one in this case evoked by the carefree piano playing and the bluesy guitars provided by the Survivors, as well as Young’s tried-and-true vocals.

“Lonely Women Make Good Lovers” was written by Spooner Oldham, who appears on this version of this song playing keys. Some might remember that this song was originally recorded in 1972 by Bob Luman, later going on to become a number four Billboard Hot Country Single in 1984 for Steve Wariner. Though the song already has an established legacy, Young’s take on the song is unmistakably hers.

Young tells PopMatters, “I’ve always loved Spooner’s ‘Lonely Women Make Good Lovers’, and it was a thrill to be able to work on this classic with him. We recorded it at Redwood Digital Studios on Broken Arrow Ranch last year and had a blast making it. If you’ve got a woman, better treat her just as good as you can.”

Lonely in a Crowded Room is out on October 27th through New West.
