Butch Walker, of South Gang and Marvelous 3 fame, recently dropped his seventh solo LP, Afraid of Ghosts, which finds this singer/songwriter in reputable form once more. In his latest video, a stripped-down acoustic session for Guitar Center, he performs the track “21+”, which comes from Walker’s experience of seeing people from his father’s hometown settle into a rote life from a very early age. Fittingly, this number sounds like it could be heard in one of those small-town bars, with a bleary-eyed singer hunched over a microphone recalling the struggles of the ordinary life. Walker evokes this scene with a vivid authenticity.
Walker keeps it brief with PopMatters about the video: “Here’s a clip that is pretty sweet. It’s from the At: Guitar Center webseries I did. Enjoy the sadness.”
Afraid of Ghosts is out now via Dangerbird.
