The Incredible Magpie Band – ‘Introducing’ (album stream) (Premiere)

The Incredible Magpie Band sound like true cadets of Sgt. Pepper on their '60s UK pop-indebted debut, Introducing.

Having garnered props from BBC’s Gary Crowley, Oasis’ Liam Gallagher, and the Jesus and Mary Chain (who they have supported in live gigs), Wakefield, UK’s the Incredible Magpie Band have already made a distinct impression prior to the release of their debut LP, Introducing, which is out next week. These chaps sound like they just rolled out of a time capsule buried in the ’60s, with the sounds and tropes of the UK pop scene of the era well imbued. Yet the band doesn’t merely go for the default Beatlemania poses; it also injects a modern indie sensibility into the proceedings, resulting in a record that has its feet firmly planted both in its own time and the past.

The band tells PopMatters about the premiere, “We recorded the album in a little studio in Leeds called Greenmount, a great place full of old analogue gear. We wanted to make it sound as live as possible, so we just set all of the gear up in one room and hit record, kept the takes down to three to four of each song, and overdubbed the vocals. So you’re basically getting how we sounded on that day, that one space in time. We think we achieved what we set out to do with the album.”

Introducing is out on 12 May in the US and 11 May in the UK via 5:15 Records.
