Semassa Boko

Semassa Boko is currently a PhD student in sociology at the University of California Irvine. His pre-cooked response to questions about his research interests goes “Social change, war, violence, and aesthetics." Refusing to be subjected by disciplinary gatekeepers, Semassa is also receiving training in critical theory so that he can analyze “pretty much anything" through the various lenses provided by black studies. A big part of that passion is studying the aesthetics of black music and how they connect to social and political consciousness at different moments in history. Hailing from North Carolina, Semassa loves his southern roots but is enjoying living out in Southern California for his formative young adult years (although he still sheds a tear every once in a while when craving a Bojangles cajun filet chicken biscuit).
