Last year I found myself in an unexpected venue checking out an act I was almost entirely unsure of. Well the night proved to be a real treet as the esteemed Café Carlyle hosted David Johansen (NY Dolls) doing his lounge lizard act as Buster Poindexter. It was a pretty awesome evening of songs and jokes.
This week, Poindexter will be back at The Carlyle, along with Brian Koonin (guitar), Richard Hammond (upright bass) and Ray Grappone (drums). Hear a bit about the show in Buster’s own words, “I like to do a show that’s a ‘total entertainment package’ with great songs and a lot of laughter, it’s my vision of what great New York cabaret should be. In the all-new show I’m bringing to Café Carlyle, I’ll be singing songs by Chet Baker, Cab Calloway, Mel Tormé, John Lee Hooker, Bobby Rydell, some Broadway, Slim Gaillard, even a Sinatra just to name a few. Playing The Carlyle gives me the opportunity to perform some of the myriad of songs and musical styles that I love and to tell a few jokes. In the Coney Island of my mind, this is the show I’d like to see!”
Although I won’t be able to make it to the opening night, I’ll keep an eye out for reviews. It should be a great show. Buster Poindexter can be found doing his thing at Café Carlyle from September 29 to October 10, 2015 (Tuesday through Saturdays) with shows at 8:45 p.m. Visit the Carlyle’s website to get further info or regular $75 reservations can be made by phone at (212) 744-1600.
