Based on a True Story is a delightfully mix-ready collection from the Crew Love collective, featuring collaborations from artists on the Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap DJ labels, as well as assorted friends. Side A features house and hip-hop influenced jams from various Soul Clap DJs, like opener, “Smoker’s Delight”. Often hypnotic, often funky mash-ups of different club styles, Based on a True Story runs the gamut of Soundcloud mix-core, often dipping into lounge-y dub grooves, as on mid-record “Love Train”, which walks a fine line of its own camp. Guest spots from Lonely C & Nick Monaco push a bit further into the strange. The record closes with a mellow Side B, featuring strong contributions from New York-based Wolf + Lamb DJ, Slow Hands. Ultimately, the “proper album” nature of the release, which label !K7 insists on, is a hard sell, but it is nevertheless a strong set of spiritually-aligned collaborations, with just enough motifs to cohere.
