A year after the passing of David Bowie, tributes are being held far and wide for the great singer. Not all of them are musical in form. The Royal Mail in the UK has just announced a set of stamps to honor the 70th year since his birth.
Meanwhile, Complexions Contemporary Ballet debuted their ballet tribute “Star Dust” in New York at the Joyce Theater. The performance began January 24th and runs through February 5th and has been called a “tribute to the genre-bending innovation of one of the most prolific rock stars of all time”, David Bowie, with ballet choreographed to nine of Bowie’s songs, like “Lazarus” “Modern Love” and “Changes”. It “takes an array of Bowie’s hits and lays a visual imprint inspired by his unique persona and restless artistic invention, resulting in a rock opera production in his honor”. Just as the ballet closes, there is another music tribute in New York. On February 5th, the Cutting Room hosts The Sound and Vision of David Bowie – A Celebration featuring many Bowie collaborators including Gail Ann Dorsey, Donny McCaslin, Catherine Russell, Every Bradley and more. The New Yorker attended a similar celebration last September calling it a “more visceral connection to the music” than the Bowie-musical Lazarus had been. Michael C. Hall, who played Thomas Newton in Lazarus and sang at September’s performance is not listed on the bill, unfortunately. I hate to speculate, but hopefully, he participates once more.
