Brooklyn’s Dinowalrus recently released their fourth album, Fairweather, which extends the psychedelic rock band’s palette into the mesmerizing, trippy, dancey vibes of late ’80s/early ’90s Manchester and the more dreamy side of Britpop. The band’s latest single is “Tides”, a song that wraps you up inside its swirling textures. The video honors the music beautifully with its inventive use of color and shifting tones. This is some seriously great psych music that proves Dinowalrus are very much masters of their psychedelic domain.
The band tells PopMatters, “The last time we did a dreamy, narrative-based video, it was a slam-dunk; we were lucky enough to have B-movie mogul/Toxic Avenger creator Lloyd Kaufman make a guest appearance, and we filmed it in his house. So after doing a bunch of performance and collage videos, we were inspired to do something similarly narrative-driven again, which is why we connected with Bill and Micah to help us concoct a concept. In short, I wake up under a tree to find a mysterious map fragment drawn on my forearm in sharpie, like a teenage prank gone wrong. After following the map through a variety of bucolic, strange landscapes, I gradually discover my bandmates and we collectively discover that we have different, yet connecting segments of the map. But where will it lead us? The concept used the lyric, “And if you say you’re on my side, then I can turn the tide” as a jumping off point. We filmed it mostly in Prospect Park and the Cemetary of the Evergreens, for a “far-from-New York City” vibe.”
