Goldrush are one of Britain’s hidden treasures, sliding smoothly into some well-deserved spotlight with the release of The Heart Is the Place. The album is an orchestral tour de force, incorporating strings, horn sections and woodwind into several beautifully composed instrumental segments, particularly the climactic opening number, “Aperture”. The Heart Is the Place contains some stunning tracks, including the more upbeat “Every One of Us”, and the beautiful “24 Hours”. While the instrumentation is solid and inventive, Goldrush are let down by their lyrics. Although sometimes simple and understated works wonders, quite often Goldrush achieve the opposite, not giving enough through their words. More often than not, the lyrics on The Heart Is the Place are drawling, plodding, and unsurprising. Although this cannot be ignored, the album is more than saved by the flow and grace of its instrumentation. The Heart Is the Place is genuine and heartwarming, and well deserving of the accolades it is sure to receive.
