Adriane Pontecorvo: Kaytranada’s classic, echoing beats, driving bass, and retro synth sounds provide the perfect backdrop for Syd’s voice, a perfect balance of elegant and airy. The result is the epitome of cool and sexy. “You’re the One” bounces and slinks, goes modern and old-school, and begs to be danced to after a glass of something ice-cold and smooth. Few songs really need an extended mix, but this song should keep going on for as long as possible. [9/10]
Andrew Paschal: Syd’s hyper-breathless vocals float gently above a glossy line of clothing store synthesizers, beckoning her object closer while remaining stubbornly enshrouded behind a faint mist. She sounds alluring if a little unbelievable when she insists that she does it “for the thrill”, since there’s not much adrenaline afoot here at all. For all of Kaytranada’s dance-pop production, the song comes across as oddly stationary, not to mention generic. [5/10]
Paul Carr: The new song from Haitian-Canadian DJ Kaytranda utilizes the breathless vocals of Syd to excellent effect. It highlights the power of a simple vocal melody woven around low-key percussion and ’80s synths. It’s a confident and colorful song that is equally at home on the dancefloor as chilling at home.
