The fifth single from Lucky Soul’s breakthrough debut album The Great Unwanted was the right way to close out the summer, or to pretend that it hasn’t left us yet, with a bright pop song — in 50s “girl group” style — about the sad wake behind a summer romance. It’s flashy fun at first and convincingly sad the more you listen. On the flip-side is the intriguing “That Hollywood Glow”, a slow-burner of relaxed drama. Singer Ali Howard sounds calm but desperate: “Don’t know how long I can run this fast / every minute might be the last,” she sings. The two songs together are a nice demonstration of the grasp this up-and-coming band has on songcraft and performance.
