At first, I didn’t believe it either when I first heard about it but it’s true: Leading Canadian Music Label Challenges RIAA Lawsuits. Granted, that their big acts, Sarah McLachlan, Avril Lavigne, and Barenaked Ladies, are all a few years past their prime but this is still a brave, righteous move on the part of the label. The stick part of the RIAA’s carrot-and-stick approach isn’t working- as the article notes, P2P traffic has actually increased since the RIAA lawsuits started. The only question is whether other labels will see the light and join Nettwerk. Since RIAA exists as to do their bidding, they have the power to stop this.
