It’s not just hating commercialism (or being Jewish) but I think that Xmas and the holidays get to me because of all the forced cheer and madness that goes on rushing for presents and ending out the year. As such, one of the few songs that sums up the season well for me is a new wave oldie chronicled in a great new artice: Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping”. Funny to read how Chris Butler thought his then-label Ze was full of junkies and Euro-trash and how a Spice Girls cover that he hates will help to pay for his kid to go to a good school. Not funny to hear about the fate of live-fast-die-young singer Patty Donahue though.
