For his latest release Steve Forbert has reunited with producer John Simon, the who oversaw sessions for the legendary 1979 record Jackrabbit Slim. This record doesn’t retain the spirit of that now classic release as it’s too busy trying to do its own thing. And that own thing is mostly allowing Forbert to be himself. That’s exactly who he is: a smart observer of the human condition and a man capable of writing songs that make you smile and laugh as often as they can make you cry. His cover of “Send in the Clowns” is one of the record’s best moments but then his own pieces, namely “A Big Comeuppance”, “Welcome to the Rolling Stones” and “Rollin’ Home to Someone You Love” hold up right beside that classic tune. Repeated listens reveal deeper thoughts and rewards than you first might imagine. It’s good to have Steve Forbert here still, making records and allowing us to embrace those small glimpses of hope a little more closely.
