In spite of his age, singer, guitarist, and harmonicist Jack Skuller fronts his namesake band the Skullers with all of the verve of a veteran who’s been at it for decades.
The 21-year-old has been rocking the circuit for a while, having begun his descent into rock ‘n’ roll at the age of 14. Since then, Skuller’s precocious chops have seen him sponsored on a tour by Radio Disney and a 2014 Holly Prize from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Collectively, the Skullers band is a trio comprised of Jack, drummer Gabriel Scholis-Fernandez, and bassist Luigi Sardi. Their debut EP, Meet the Skullers, comes with a fiery, bluesy sentiment that feels like an assemblage of music well beyond their years.
Jack Skuller says, “We recorded the EP at Studio G, Brooklyn. It’s comfortable like an old barn but records like a new castle! Our producer, Joel Hamilton, kept our sound true and allowed the fun, power, and simplicity to shine through, so we didn’t lose sense of what we do under the confines of recording. We definitely give a nod to our roots but with modern production values.”
Produced by Joel Hamilton (the Black Keys, Tom Waits), Meet the Skullers releases on 22 September.
