One of what feels like hundreds of Ibiza-themed (Eivissa is the Catalan name for Ibiza) compilations hitting the market this year, Defected’s double disc Eivissa 2007 offers up more than two hours of blissed out house music suitable for dancing the night away with hundreds of other revelers. Mixed by Defected label head honcho Simon Dunsmore, the disc features the sort of massive, floor-filling anthems I can only assume are played nightly at super clubs like Pacha, Amnesia, or Space. Disc 1 kicks off with a collaboration between the Todd Terry, DJ Sneak, Terry Hunter, and the legendary Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, featuring vocals by Tara McDonald. With its funk-inspired guitar and groovy horn line, the track has a retro feel completely unlike the usual Ibiza-inspired house from labels like Hed Kandi. The old-school disco feel gradually morphs into more contemporary sounds as Dunsmore moves through vocal heavy tunes from Mood II Swing, featuring Lauren (“It’s Gonna Work Out”) and Spencer Gray (the Asad Rizvi remix of “Pillow Talk”) to the exceptionally groovy “Kiss the Moon” by Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox. Dunsmore mixes things up a bit on disc 2, spinning more percussion heavy tracks with consistently interesting grooves, from the keyboard-oriented “Time After Time” by Soul Central, featuring Abigail Bailey to Phuture’s propulsive “Rise From Your Grave” and the compilation closing “Cool It” by Basement Jaxx. Definitely worth checking out.
